Self-Evaluation and Improvement In Practice
The XLence Teaching and Learning module provides a secure, transparent and honest development system that securely stores information and supports the evaluation of your school’s provision. It provides the ideal structure for you to track improvement recommendations and their impact.
You can choose to use our provided forms for lesson visits, learning walks, work scrutinies and planning reviews or simply ask us to load your preferred forms that support your context onto the system for you to use. We can also provide descriptors to support your activities that are aligned to the Professional Standards and therefore support your staff’s Professional Learning Journeys (PLJ).
Senior leaders and leaders of Areas of Learning and Experience (AOLE) can easily track curriculum development and progress made, and ensure that the school is achieving the best for all learners. Individual staff members can access information on their development and the next steps on their PLJ.
Approach to Self-Evaluation
There is no prescribed format for self-evaluation but there are essential elements:
Using a range of activities, schools should consider how their provision, over time, supports learners’ progress towards realising the curriculum purposes.
Learner progression along a continuum of learning from ages 3 to 16 is central to Curriculum for Wales. This requires assessment of each individual learner to ensure they make progress at an appropriate pace, with the necessary support and challenge.
Engaging with learners, staff and the school community is essential to deliver the best outcomes for each learner and is an integral part of developing the school as an effective learning organisation.
Schools should plan, implement and review their improvement strategies. The review step is essential in evaluating how sustainable and successful actions have been.

Transparent Pricing
The Teaching and Learning Development module is one of five modules we offer that support schools – other modules available include Staff Appraisal and Development, Continuing Professional Development, 360 Review and School Development – and it can be purchased on a one-year or three-year contract.
Your annual licence fee includes unlimited telephone and email support and there are no limits on the number of staff you can have on the system. Online training sessions are always free and in-school training is also available from £350/half-day (plus VAT + expenses).
